High-energy-density physics is an actively growing field that exploits the ability of various modern devices to create pressures of millions of atmospheres in dynamic, high-temperature, and even relativistic systems. This field of physics is essential to inertial fusion research, to using such tools to address issues in astrophysics, and to other fundamental studies and applications. To promote the spread of broad, fundamental knowledge in this new field, and to help train the new entrants to it, this summer school is being offered.
This two-week course was previously offered in 2004 and 2006. The attendees were extremely positive on the experience, and in particular valued having a connected sequence of lectures by a single presenter. For this reason, we are taking the same approach again. The course includes approximately 40 hours of lecture on 11 days, in addition to time for reading, working problems, and discussions. The lectures will be based on the book on high-energy-density physics authored by Prof. R.P. Drake, available from Springer Verlag. Dr. Drake will present the lectures, which are based on the previous summer school and a course taught previously at Michigan. Attendees will receive a copy of the book.
The course is aimed primarily at graduate students, young scientists, and experienced scientists who are just entering high-energy-density physics. Both the book and the lectures assume facility with partial differential vector calculus.
The summer school will be held at Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) in Traverse City, Michigan (http://www.nmc.edu). The facilities are excellent, with plenty of nice places to study or talk, and good internet connections. NMC, a beautiful campus, is located on a peninsula a few minutes walk from parks and beaches on both East and West Grand Traverse Bay. This is a spectacular place to be. Beyond these nice features, Traverse City is a major center of recreation, with extensive biking or skating trails in addition to water activities, many golf courses, and so on. There is also good hiking a little further out. Traverse City is approximately on the 45th parallel, and is normally very pleasant at this time of year. Previous attendees have been very enthusiastic about this location.
